Growing up in the Northern Shenandoah Valley

If you would have told me when I was…let’s say…12 or older, that I would be not only living – but working AND raising my family in Winchester, VA (the SAME town I grew up in, mind you) I would NOT believe you. If you ask any 90s-00s Winchester kid – I can almost guarantee that they would say the same. Something along the lines of, “Winchester sucks” there is “nothing to do.” Perhaps, that was just a childish thing to say. Or, maybe, when looking back at the area around 20-25 years ago now, our area has so vastly expanded. In fact, I love it so much I would love to challenge anyone who tells me differently! So what changed? In my opinion Winchester has become the place to be. You get way more bang for your buck then our neighbors over the mountain BUT there are still many things to do and in a commutable distance of the “BIG” city, so to speak. People caught on, and growth has happened. To be honest, many locals hate this which I guess is pretty common. Sometimes people call us a little Ashburn, or a little Leesburg. However, I disagree. Despite the fact that our area has grown tremendously and continues to be a hot spot, there is still less traffic, better price tags on homes, and less commercialized activities. Some people dislike that they have to drive a bit farther for something – but to me, it adds some charm. It keeps things simple. It gives me something to look forward to even more if we choose to ‘get out of town’. Don’t get me wrong – we have a TON of commercial things too – it is not like we don’t have targets, star bucks, and the ‘essentials’ – we certainly do. There is just a bit less of it. But what do we have that makes us so unique and special? That is going to be one of my next posts where I reflect on some of my favorite gems of Winchester, VA and the Northern Shenandoah Valley. If you are thinking about moving to the area, I can tell you almost anything you want to know. I won’t sugar coat it either – no town is without flaws – but if you have to pick one, you won’t be disappointed you checked out Winchester. Contact me at claire@myhometownrealtors.com !
